Some cities had disco dance instructors or dance schools which taught people how to do popular disco dances such as touch dancing, the hustle and the cha cha. The first of these synthesizers to appear was the Buchla. Appearing in 1963, it was the product of an effort spearheaded by musique concrète composer Morton Subotnick.

This unique blend of influences aligns techno with the aesthetic referred to as AfroDiasporic Futurism. The term rave is still often used to describe an unlicensed party in some parts of the United Kingdom particularly the South East - perhaps because larger licensed rave events have become less common due to anti-drugs enforcement causing venue owners to be wary of hosting them.
